The boys took the stage with their usual panache. Opening with tunes
from their latest CD “Five and Dime Quartet”. “Springer”
was the first offering of the night and it really woke up the crowd. Most
of the folks in attendance were not used to the high energy performance
and manic stage antics of the Rock n Roll Rat Pack. One thing was certain,
they loved it. As Scotty and the boys moved through the set, song after
song was delivered in a non-stop show that had the place on their feet
and dancing in the aisles. The band is always at their best when they
have a large stage to strut their stuff on and this stage was enormous.
Johnny and Bobby were using every square foot that was available to them.
Joey was on top of his game, driving the crowd wild with his powerful
drum beat.
Even when the boys slowed things down a bit, the fans hung on every note.
Blind Bob delivered the moving ballad “My Empty Arms” with
all the soulfulness of an old Stax tune. The highlight of the evening,
of course, was when the band played the now classic tune “American
Icon”. This tribute to Elvis never fails to bring down the house
wherever it’s played but here, in front of this rockabilly festival
crowd, the reaction was amazing.
The finale was the medley “Buena Sera/Kiss Me Quick”. Since
the boys first played this rendition at the Night of One Hundred Elvis’
in 2005 it has become a staple. After an introduction and some snappy
banter between Scotty, Johnny and Bob, they started in. Louis Prema would
be proud to hear his tune spun so cleverly. And the “King”
himself would be pleased at the singing of Scotty, and the choreography
of Johnny and Bob as they danced around the stage. This is a great tune
done by great performers. As one critic called it, “An instant classic”.
The band left the stage to a standing ovation from the capacity house
assembled to hear the Valentinos and pay homage to the legends of rockabilly
music that were on hand that night. As BB said after the show, “We
always try to put on the best show we can every night. But when you play
here, in from of the legends and heroes of rockabilly music it makes you
dig down a little deeper. You want to thank them for what they brought
to the table back in the day. And by the way they still can bring it today”.
What can you add to that? A great show from a great band on a great night.
You must get out and see the Vegas Valentinos and you’ll know what
everyone talking about down here. What a show! What great entertainers!
