CM: Yes, it was Sylvia…Man we used lots of glass cleaner that day (LOL).Ah,
memories…You’re family was and is so special to me to keep
that publication going for so long and to keep me in the business as well.
S2TC: I still have all the issues - mint condition too. Except a couple
of course; over time the pages stuck together…
CM: Ah stuck together (LOL) Nice segway. Being out here in the Northeast
what is going on?
S2TC: Lots, and some really nice and ambitious people too. I think we
did make the right move over the years. In Baltimore and the “Night
of 100 Elvises” is an event we’re thrilled to be a part of
every year. It’s fun, well organized, and a great retro time. Not
to mention the gorgeous women that attend the event. They’ve got
an ice sculpture of Elvis there, and the women stand so close and are
so HOT that you can actually watch it melt…
CM: I know, I’ve seen you boys on the road. The hotel/motel lobbies
are always full of girls waiting for pics and autographs. In your opinion,
are you boys stars yet?
S2TC: We’re not intending to be. Like BB says, we want to have
a good time and share great memories with folks. If seeing, meeting, and
hanging on us in a photo makes them happy, isn’t that what an entertainer
is? And we are that …everyday, and everywhere we go. We’re
the weird, loud, Uncle at the party that no one can avoid. (LOL) No reflection
on Uncle Bruno of course...
CM: Of course, great man and has you boys on his mind constantly. That
must be a degree of security?
S2TC: Oh sure, it removes any concerns we might have wherever we go.
CM: I know you’re going to sign a label deal with Black Rose correct?
S2TC: Yes we are, and we’re very excited. First off, Al is a man
of vision. He’s a communicator and a go-getter. No fooling around
and hard work are his forte’. We kind of found each other. Our Papa
did some background checks on him and the guy is a legend I tell you.
He has met and guided so so many artists it’s like a Hollywood scrapbook
just talking with him. We know as a band we will come through for this
guy. We’ll work incredibly hard towards our goals like we always
have but in being in the Black Rose stable now. The label will take us
as a work horse and make us a racing thoroughbred.
CM: Ah Scotty, always with the catch line, huh? What do you think will
change for you in doing this?
S2TC: World domination… (LOL) Only kidding. I think that when we
are exposed to an expecting audience no one leaves disappointed and everyone
wants to be a part of the Family. This is why we now have 2 web-sites
for the simple fact is the desire to be part of the fun we’re creating.
So, we have www.thevegasvalentinos.net that our sister Angelina has created
and is the editor in chief. She gets all kinds of stuff up there and in
return our old site too benefits. We can now offer recipes, contests,
and “Show Us Your V’s” a photo submission thing in which
a fan of the VV’s can mail in their pictures via e-mail or snail
mail and if we use it they receive a free Vegas Valentino gift. To compliment
the new site, the older site, is being rebuilt in a swank Vegas lounge
look with actual downloadable IPOD content and videos
CM: Fantastic! I see the world of The Vegas Valentinos behind the scenes
and the operation is AMAZING. How many working folks are in the inner
circle?
S2TC: Well, most are relatives and friends of relatives, this goes back
to the old Five Points philosophy of gangs and mobs in there heyday. Someone
had a skill and knew or was in a family that had other operations. As
individuals they were sufficient but as a team they were feared and dominating.
To answer the question though, I’d say we got 15 now that keep the
Vegas Valentinos aloft
CM: You’re talking organized crime?
S2TC: It’s better than disorganized crime, right? Seriously, we’re
not into that scene as a family anymore. I know back in Capone’s
day our Grandfather made whiskey in a “Speakeasy” on the outskirts
of Boston. They had a huge operation and even 2 labeling machines. To
give cover, the place was a Pizza joint, but there was more sold there
than pizza. Capice? But Papa went to Vegas to make his mark, at the time
Bruno was in Detroit, I think. But, everyone kind of tried to get jobs
done without stepping on toes of others. Respect. That’s what it
comes down too. Don’t F@^% with us and we won’t F@^% with
you. We’re all a great family and will help you anyway possible.
But, you cross us and we got a problem.
CM: Some say this is all camp - true?
S2TC: Some is, some isn’t and some we’ll never tell. You
know that, for a fact Craven. We can validate almost anything we say.
But we need not prove anything to anyone.
CM: Back to talent and music. The new CD “Five & Dime Quartet”
thoughts
S2TC: Well, every CD we do has its own little life. It’s like a
child. They all come from your loins but they all have little individual
traits and characteristics. This is so like a VV CD. Some purist of a
genre might not like it all but it is hard to not like something off of
the CD. We cover a lot styles and we don’t mean to confuse anyone
we just write what we feel and play the way we always do. A controlled
riot sort of. Sun Records fits us perfectly for our Studio away from our
studio. Why? Because the Engineer, James Lott is fantastic, a great guy
and engineer. He helps keep us in line and focused, he has an industry
ear, and can make chicken shit into chicken salad. His talent is hard
to find. We did 15 songs there this year and 14 will be released in a
month or two. What I like about the whole situation is the history that
we record in. In saying that I don’t mean the hallowed walls but
the opinion and what SUN stood for. It’s the perfect spot for the
Vegas Valentinos and what Sam always took in. A bunch of musical guys
that sounded like no one in particular, and had their own style. Sam not
only opened his doors to this talent but propelled it into stardom.
CM: Why do you think he had that magic?
S2TC: The magic comes from the embracing and open-mindedness of not changing
the individual but leading them to the right pasture. This is what we
get out of SUN and what James still brings today. I spent a lot of time
talking, and laughing, with James and Matt, another Engineer in training.
They’re genuine people and it’s chemistry. James is like Sam
never passed away at all. In fact, James is carrying the legacy for him.
CM: Scotty that is the biggest compliment I’ve ever heard a VV
give and individual.
S2TC: And, it’s well deserved and understated to boot. Another
guy to watch is our Cousin Mikey. He’s going to make his mark shortly
in the film industry. He’s done several MTV styled music videos
for us and now the feature film. He’ll kick the door in at Sundance
and locally the Woods Hole Festival. And the family will be cheering him
on in the front row.
CM: I met him and saw his work a couple of weeks ago. He’s an inventor
too right?
S2TC: The man's a genius. Seriously, he has all the brains of our family.
Watch for his films on our website and watch for his films at these Festivals
very soon.
CM: How’s the music scene in Boston?
S2TC: What scene? It’s all self absorbing and filled with a 4-year
angst. All the good ones and all the creative process is gone. Call me
nostalgic, old minded, whatever. I don’t’ hear it here? The
ring of creating and playing music live here is dead. Clubs have it tough
because the scene has changed so much that bands with “followings”
belong to the ages. It’s a no one wins situation. The bands that
due create a stir are only here for 4 years tops…Hmmm, sounds like
its duration runs with something else? It’s school driven. Bands
are gathered while they go down the road of education until graduation
then. Bang, they’re off working in daddy’s company somewhere
and making a living. The angst is removed, because now they have to be
part of an actual work force. And hence, the bands are gone. To take this
a step further, Clubs can’t pay, because the drinking is less than
before and the $$$ coming in is less. So, no one wants to be a slave to
anyone and therefore you get these “Blues Jams” in which you
show up and do your thing for a handful of people and some after work
construction guys that don’t want to go home to their lives. Who
the hell benefits from this? I have seen some good bands that have played
for just us and maybe 3 other people around and it’s a crying shame.
It’s a clique’ no doubt and it’s a meat grinder for
4 years…
CM: Some people have asked why you don’t have more venues in the
area. Is this why?
S2TC: I looked around at some venues but without the proper respect to
my Uncle they can go shit in their hat. These flunky bastards that set
rules for us to follow need a F@^%ing slap. If they think we’re
joking try us. We’ll be down there fast!!!
CM: I’ve seen that side once or twice. It’s very disturbing.
I feel embarrassed for them.
S2TC: Well, they don’t think twice of bitching off to us so, when
we’ve had enough something needs to give.
CM: I remember when you guys did the “Little Stevens Garage Band
Contest” and where chosen to participate out of 180+ entries at
the Roxy on Tremont. That was a bad scene afterwards.
S2TC: Oh, I know what you mean. A play from behind the Tremont with these
freaky blue faced guys was getting out in the street. They came over to
BB and were given him some lip. BB had a “spell” and wasn’t
seeing too well and Joey and I came out the back to find these idiots
around BB taunting him. I grabbed the first geek by his throat and Joey
smashed the other guy into the dumpster. We let BB take the pleasure of
body-slamming them into the dumpster. Don’t get BB mad…When
he gets his sight back you’ll see things his way guaranteed.
CM: Absolutely. You guys took that whole back street in awe.
S2TC: The Police arrived and at that time Uncle Bruno was en route. We
got off and all was good. The blue freaks were a little scuffed up but
no big deal…
CM: Scotty thanks for the time and some VV memories
S2TC: Anytime |
